The honest use cases
Students end up handing out an email address constantly: a study tool you want to try, a PDF behind a form, a society mailing list, a marketplace listing, a one-off webinar. None of those need your university address, and several of them will sell or leak it.
Using a disposable inbox for that category is straightforward good hygiene. Your institutional mailbox stays for coursework, staff and anything official; the throwaway address absorbs the rest.
What this is not for
It is not a route around student verification. Providers that offer student pricing check enrolment — through your institution, through a verification partner such as UNiDAYS or Student Beans, or by asking for documentation. A domain that merely looks educational fails all of those checks, and attempting to pass one off as institutional breaches both their terms and our acceptable use policy.
It is also not somewhere to route anything you need to recover: student finance, exam boards, visa correspondence, banking. Those belong in a permanent mailbox.
If you want the address to stick around
Create a free account and the inbox stops expiring. You keep the same address, messages persist until you delete them, and you can send as well as receive. That turns a two-hour throwaway into a durable secondary address for the sign-ups you would rather keep separated from everything else.
